Mavericks: Everest of the Seas

The many moods of Maverick's is returning for its second year. This world-famous big wave break just off Half Moon Bay will be the subject of a unique art exhibit featuring the finest work of a group of local professional photographers who have devoted their lives to capturing the decisive moments of action at the legendary surf spot. A featured attraction will be a collection of beautifully crafted big wave guns. Ed Grant, Coastal Arts League member and Mavericks photographer, has assembled the most spectacular images from the cutting-edge photojournalists who risk life and limb to document the wave's intense man-against-the-sea drama and obsessive lifestyle of Maverick's elite riders. Both the shooters and the surfers who challenge the break on its most extreme days will make a rare one-time public appearance. This collection of brilliant images are sure to give you the visual ride of your life and views from the top of the watery world! The event is open to the public & admission is free.

Meet the Maverick’s legends on Thursday, February 11 from 6 - 9:00 pm at the Coastal Arts League Gallery, 300 Main St., Half Moon Bay

Don Montgomery – MAVSURFER photographer, his award winning photographs have appeared in all major surfing magazines. Honored in 2005 at the Billabong Global Big Wave Awards for capturing the largest wave ridden in the Paddle-In-Category.

Tony Canadas – is a Moss Beach resident and surfer who is recognized for his use of light, color & intensity to create memorable Mavericks photography. He captures advertising and editorial images for a wide variety of companies from Discovery Channel and AOL to Quiksilver and Volcom. His photographs are published internationally in books, magazines, calendars and on the web.

Elizabeth Pepin Silva – A San Francisco based surfer & photographer. She is famous for her award winning films, including “One Winter Story” which features Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to surf Mavericks. Elizabeth can lay claim to 5 Emmy awards. Her photographs have been shown in galleries and museums and featured in publications around the world. She has been the principal photographer for two women’s surf books.

Eric Nelson – an award winning filmmaker who has been chronicling Mavericks for nearly 2 decades. His feature “Whipped” garnered the EXPN Tube Action Sports Film Festival’s audience choice award. Eric has footage featured in the award winning film “Riding Giants”. Other clients include ESPN, The Weather Channel, Good Morning America, National Geographic, Sony Pictures and the major television networks.

Jeff Clark - One of the most noteworthy and respected big wave surfers, famous for surfing Mavericks alone for 15 years before it was widely discovered by the big-wave surfing community. Jeff’s collection of beautifully crafted big wave guns set the standard for excellence.

Grant Washburn - Writer/filmmaker/surfer who has worked on hundreds of surfing projects. He has competed & finished in the finals or semis in all of the competitions at Maverick's

Ryan Seelbach – A consistent Mavericks charger - has advanced to the semifinals in the last three contests, finishing 12th, ninth and seventh, respectively.   

Bruce Jenkins - An extraordinary sportswriter for the San Francisco Chronicle and author/editor of many surfing books. Very few people can match Bruce’s knowledge & passion for the Mavericks scene.

Fred Pompermayer – His photo of Derek Dunfee at Mavericks won the Monster Paddle Award at last years Billabong XXL Ride of the Year Award. He was born in Brazil in 1975. From a very young age he was fascinated with the power of the ocean. While studying Architecture in university he took a photography class where he found an instant fulfillment. After graduating with a degree in Architecture, he boldly decided to combined his two passions of surfing and photography together, abandoned his major, and set out to become a surf photographer!
