Slick Parking at the DMV was taken on an shiny, wet, and exceptionally inspiring Sunday morning while on my way home early from work. As fate would have it, a friend was already working my shift, so I made my way home snapping hundreds of photos along the way (just as I did walking to work), but it was when I decided to cut across the DMV parking lot that I struck Oil! Quite a bit of time went by before it occurred to me that this photo, aside from being visually interesting, was also very layered and pregnant with meaning. In this image, the Sun and Water, both basic elements and powerful symbols of Life, are superimposed over oily asphalt. Oil, being black and made of dead ancient organisms, is easily connected to Darkness, Death, and in recent times Disaster, which have trailed it from the time of it's discovery to the present. So besides being visually stimulating, I feel that this image captures within it a vibrant visual harmony between two of the most basic elements of life, and one of the leading causes of global warming, environmental & political disaster, greed, war, and (ironically enough) beautifully colored water. |
